FAQ

1. How long is the incubation period?

The formal mode of engagement would be for one year. However, we intend to keep in touch with our alumni and are willing to extend our mentoring and business support as needed.

2. What form of training will I get at SELCO Incubation Centre?

SELCO Incubation center will provide a very operational training facilitated by job shadowing SELCO’s own operations. Based on which the entrepreneur would iterate his/her own location where our team will come and trouble shoot in the process. Training will be a mix of classroom and experiential based form of engagement to enrich the outcome. SELCO’s existing business provides live scenarios for entrepreneurs to learn from and imbibe. This will be coupled from classroom inputs from senior management of SELCO and external advisors for various areas such as – finance, banking relationships, technology, logistics etc.,

3. Is there a fee involved for the training?

No, there is no fee for the training inducted. SELCO Incubation centre first intends to understand the terrain in which the venture/entrepreneur will operate and will mutually work on an ongoing relationship.

4. I am new to solar technology and/or setting up a business at the time of application, would I still get incubated for my venture?

We would prefer to work with individuals who have established a pilot or have spent a considerable amount of time in the region where they intend to establish the business. It is crucial to display seriousness of pursuing the venture full time. However, we would still encourage you to apply for the program and help us understand your reasons where you stand as we establish your credence in a coherent manner considering all other factors.

5. Will SELCO Incubation Centre only focus on rural solar energy businesses?

Our parent entity – SELCO has credibility and experience in the solar energy business for the underserved rural and urban communities for the past seventeen years. Hence, our expertise is thus established in this sector. We intend to leverage on this for the first year of the incubation centre. We shall carefully examine the other renewable energy ventures in the subsequent years of our efforts.

6. Do I have to be based in Karnataka for one full year as a training?

Training/mentoring at the SELCO Incubation Centre is a combination of classroom and field-based learning. For portions of the training (30-45 days extended over one year) you are expected to be at the SELCO operations in Karnataka. In no case is this at a continuous stretch. The entrepreneur will shuttle between Karnataka and his/her own field operations in order to job shadow the business setup.

7. Do I have to be based in Karnataka for one full year as a training?

8. Will I get a stipend/allowance during the training period?

No, we are not paying entrepreneurs any stipend/allowance during the training

9. Will SELCO Incubation Centre invest the initial capital for my venture?

No, we do not intend to invest in the seed money of the venture. However, we shall guide to potential sources of capital as and when the need arises.

10. What is the relationship of SELCO, the company and SELCO Incubation Centre?

SELCO is a private limited company selling solar lighting solutions to the poor for the last seventeen years. SELCO Incubation Centre, is a non-profit organisation housed by S3IDF which is enabling knowledge transfer of SELCO’s experience to customize solar lighting technology to the under served communities
